Eknath Shinde resigns, to act as caretaker Maharashtra chief minister

Eknath Shinde tendered his resignation as chief minister to governor CP Radhakrishnan as the term of the Maharashtra assembly ended on Tuesday. The governor, however, asked Shinde to remain as caretaker CM until new government is sworn-in. NCP chief Ajit Pawar and Devendra Fadnavis also reached the governor's office to tender their resignation. The Mahayuti alliance is yet to decide on its chief ministerial candidate after its huge win in the state. Two time chief minister and current deputy CM, Devendra Fadnavis is also seen as a choice for the position, as he is part of the BJP, the single largest party in the assembly. While Maharashtra voters have delivered a decisive victory to the Mahayuti, uncertainty remains regarding the next chief minister. Senior Mahayuti leaders are currently in discussions to determine the state's leadership. Although deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis is the frontrunner for the post, the Shiv Sena supports retaining Eknath Shinde as chief mi...

Revanth Declines Adani Funds for Skills Varsity

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy said on Monday that the state government has declined a Rs.100-crore donation from the Adani Group intended for the Young India Skills University. The decision was made to distance the institution from ongoing controversies involving the Adani conglomerate, he added. Addressing a press conference on Monday, the Chief Minister said,: “We have not accepted funds or donations from any organisation, including the Adani Group, for the Young India Skills University. This decision ensures we stay clear of unnecessary disputes.” The move comes amidst allegations in an indictment in the US that the Adani Group paid bribes to Indian government officials to secure solar power contracts — a charge the group has strongly denied. The `100-crore donation, announced by Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani during an October meeting with Revanth Reddy, was set to support the development of the Skill University. Opposition parties, including the BJP and the BRS, criticis...

The Supreme Court today (November 25) came down heavily on authorities for not enforcing the ban on entry of trucks and light commercial vehicles to Delhi, a measure which was imposed by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) as part of its GRAP-IV measures to address severe air pollution. The Court directed the CAQM to initiate prosecution in terms of Section 14 of the CAQM Act against the officials who failed to enforce the directives. The bench of Justice AS Oka and Justice AG Masih was hearing a batch of petitions regarding the worsening air pollution in Delhi-NCR. “It is apparent that the authorities which are mentioned against item numbers 1, 2 and 3 of stage 4 of GRAP have made no earnest effort to implement the action in terms of clauses 1 - 3. Some police teams were deputed at a few entry points that also without any specific instruction. In fact the report of the court commissioner indicates that at most of the entry points the police were posted pursuant to th...

Wedding, Not Politics: Devendra Fadnavis Explains Quick Visit To Delhi

Devendra Fadnavis, seen as the front-runner in the race for the top job in Maharashtra, came to Delhi last evening, sparking anticipation about a meeting with the Central leadership to resolve the Chief Ministership issue. But he doused expectation saying no meeting on the matter has been planned and he is in the national capital to attend the wedding of the daughter of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. Two days after the Maharashtra assembly election results were declared, there has been no announcement about the big question of who would be the next Chief Minister of the state. While Mr Fadnavis has been seen as the front-runner for the post, ally Shiv Sena is keen that its chief Eknath Shinde continues in the top job. Off the records, leaders say that he deserves the job since it is his government's welfare projects that helped the ruling alliance reach a sweeping victory. Shiv Sena spokesperson Naresh Mhaske cited the "Bihar model" to assert that Mr Shinde should continue ...

Amid Delay Over CM Decision, Eknath Shinde Urges Supporters To Avoid Gathering At ‘Varsha’

Amid speculation over Maharashtra's next chief minister after Mahayuti's impressive assembly election performance, Eknath Shinde has urged his supporters to refrain from gathering at his official residence, ‘Varsha,’ in South Mumbai, to advocate for his continuation as chief minister. The Shiv Sena leader specifically requested supporters to avoid assembling outside the ‘Varsha’ bungalow or any other location in his favor. “After the great victory of Mahayutti, our government will be formed once again in the state. As a grand alliance, we contested the election together and are still together today. Out of love for me, some congregations have appealed to everyone to gather together and come to Mumbai. I am deeply grateful for your love. But I appeal that no one should come together in my support in such a manner,” Eknath Shinde said on X. “Once again it is my humble request that Shiv Sena workers should not assemble at Varsha Niwas or anywhere else. The grand alliance has been ...
